Trouble @ MSNBC? |

Politico reports:
"The situation at our channel is about to blow up,” a high-ranking MSNBC journalist told Politico on Wednesday.
... On Monday evening, Olbermann interrupted Scarborough while he was talking about McCain being competitive in the polls. “Jesus, Joe, why don’t you get a shovel?” Olbermann remarked.
On “Morning Joe” the following day, a clearly agitated Scarborough went off on Shuster during a discussion of Iraq, which quickly devolved over several cringe-worthy minutes into personal attacks, such as Scarborough telling the world how his colleague missed the show three times by oversleeping. "Are you Rip Van Shuster?” Scarborough asked. “Have you been sleeping for the past couple of months?”
But Scarborough, a former Republican congressman from Florida, became enraged when Shuster made a reference to “your party.” Asked by Scarborough what his party was, Shuster said he was an “independent.”
"I feel so comforted by the fact that you're an independent,” Scarborough said, in a mocking tone. “I bet everybody at MSNBC has independent on their voting cards. Oh, we're down the middle now.” (Shuster left the set, but returned later to hug it out, "Entourage"-style.)
That night, Scarborough told NPR that he “get[s] frustrated by people who have an obvious partisan bias that don't proclaim that bias.”

WaPost Runs Russian Propaganda Section |
|

Today's Washington Post arrived with an insert that looked very much like part of the newspaper. The insert section titled, "Russia, Beyond The Headlines" could easily be confused with real news -- despite the words, "an advertising supplement to the Washington Post," and the disclaimer: "This pull-out is produced and published by Rosslyskaya Gazeta (Russia) and did not involve the news or editorial departments of the Washington Post."
The top story headline reads: "Georgian Bombs Rained on Us." And though it is carefully arranged to look like a legitimate newspaper (some sections deal with literature, investments, etc.) the goal is obviously propaganda. Another front page (below the fold) section is headlined, "Minister Faults West in Georgia." Here's an excerpt:
"Russia started moving troops in support of peacekeepers only on the second day of Georgia's full-scale military assault on the republic." It is frankly unbelievable that the Post is making money off of running Russian agitprop in their paper.
Update: Rob Bluey emails me some good points on the subject (check out his post over at RedState):
1) . This comes on the same day when the Washington Post put a story on A1 about Russia supporting the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. I know there are lines between editorial and advertising, but most people probably won’t pay attention to the fine print.
2) . I’ve seen the Washington Post run these supplements before for Russia and several other countries. I’m sure they’re paying a pretty penny to advertise. But it must be effective, otherwise we wouldn’t see so many doing it.

Olympic Gold No Sign of National Rise |

Many commentators drew dire conclusions from the fact that China won more gold medals at the Beijing Olympics than the United States. Never mind America’s continued leadership in total medals – 110 to China’s 100. Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times still said that China’s dominance of the gold indicated a forthcoming and similar “surge” in “the arts, in business, in science, in education…Get used to it.” Actually, 2008 is hardly the first year that American athletes lost to representatives of Communist dictatorships. The US lost the medals race to the Soviet Union in Munich in 1972 (in overall medals 99 to 91, and for gold medals a lopsided 50 to 33) and we finished third – behind both the USSR and East Germany – in Seoul in 1988. Within two years of those ’88 games, the Soviet Union had collapsed, and East Germany had disappeared—swallowed up by a re-united, democratic German republic. Athletic achievements may lend themselves to propaganda, but despite the oohs-and-ahs of China’s admirers in the Western press, they’re no proof of national strength or dynamism. I’m Michael Medved.

If you actually wanted to watch terrible speeches by Senator Claire McCaskill and Jim Leech you had to watch Fox News -- CNN and MSNBC decided early in the evening that the convention was a snore-fest and switched to pundit-chatter. David Gergen, James Carville and Donna Brazille all agreed that --with the exception of the Kennedy tribute -- the Democrats had wasted the first two hours of the American public's attention.
